Retinal Vein Occlusion Treatments
Traditionally Retinal Vein Occlusion treatments were not available at all and the eye was left to recover as best as it could without any intervention. Laser treatment was done in some cases to help stabilise vision or prevent complications. A steroid called triamcinolone has also been widely used but had a high rate of side effects.
Eye Injections for Retinal Vein Occlusion
The latest treatment approach for Retinal Vein Occlusion involves the injection of chemicals into the eye. Ozurdex is a treatment licensed for this disease.
Lucentis is expected to receive a license in 2011. Other options include Avastin eye injections.Eye injections are showing the potential to improve vision in patients who may otherwise not show as much recovery. The injections may also be supplemented by laser treatment.
Ozurdex Injections
Ozurdex is a minute implant that is inserted into the eye; it is a slow releasing steroid that can act on the Retina for several months at a time. In large studies ozurdex has shown viusal benefit over standard treatment with lower rate of side effects than triamcinolone.
Avastin Injections
Avastin is used to treat retinal vein occlusion as well as many other eye diseases. It needs to be administered more frequently than Ozurdex (4-6 weekly) but has been reported to be effective and offer better long term visual prognosis than previous standard care.
Lucentis Injections
Lucentis is showing promising results in recently reported large clinical trials. It will also be licensed for the treatment of retinal vein occlusion in Europe in 2011
